How It Works

An overview of the Americano format and the Smart Pairing system.

Format rotationA series can alternate between the Single Americano and Team Americano formats — each tournament says which one it is.

EligibilityPlayers must complete at least one Single Americano before they are eligible to participate in a Team Americano.

Smart PairingTeam Americano pairings are generated automatically, using players' Pairing rating to balance the four teams as evenly as possible.

Continuous rebalancingEach Team Americano result adjusts both partners' Pairing rating, so Smart Pairing produces different team combinations over time, even among the same group of players.

Single rating unaffectedTeam Americano results affect only the Pairing rating. Single rankings are calculated exclusively from Single Americano results.

This structure is designed to keep tournaments competitive and enjoyable, support player development, and ensure regular variety in pairings and opponents.

Win and it goes up, lose and it goes down. That is the whole idea. Everything below is about how far it moves.

Who you beat matters more than how often

Beat a strong pair and you gain a lot. Beat a weaker one and you gain a little - you were supposed to win.

Losing to a strong pair costs almost nothing. Losing to a weaker one costs more.

A win always moves you up. How far depends on the score: a 32:0 counts about twice as much as a 17:15.

Newcomers and guests

Someone we do not know yet changes little

After one evening we hardly know how good you are, so those games move everyone else only slightly. Nobody gets pulled down by a stand-in.

Play a few evenings and your number settles. Stay away a while and it becomes uncertain again, so your comeback counts a bit more.

Until you have played two tournaments your number is marked as not yet reliable.

Every ranking keeps its own number. Single and team are apart because in a team event you keep the same partner all evening, so a good or bad partner never evens out. Level and field are apart for the same reason: you can only be compared with people you actually played. So a mixed team ranking and an open team ranking are two different tables, and your number in one says nothing about the other. Semifinals and finals count too, but only through their outcome and at half weight - they are played to a set, not to points, so the score would not fit the same scale. How many sets were played makes no difference: what counts is who won.

The table is worked out fresh every time you open this page, straight from the recorded matches. So if an old result gets corrected, the ranking corrects itself. Do not read too much into the size of the number on its own - what it means is the gap to the players around you.
